About the treatment

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is a specialist approach to foot reflexology developed by Sally Kay while working in cancer care. It uses a particular sequence focused on the lymphatic reflex areas of the feet, rather than a general reflexology routine. The aim of the method is to influence lymphatic function through these reflex areas; its clinical effects are still being investigated.

In reflexology, areas of the feet are understood to correspond to different parts of the body. RLD applies this approach specifically to the lymphatic reflexes. Treatment takes place on the feet, rather than directly massaging an area of swelling. You remain clothed, apart from removing your shoes and socks.

At Renew Therapies, the emphasis is on a considered appointment that takes account of your health, comfort and reasons for visiting. You can ask questions before treatment and discuss what you hope to get from your time with Fiona.

Who is Sally Kay?

Sally Kay is a reflexology practitioner, researcher, educator and author who developed RLD through her clinical work. Her work received the Federation of Holistic Therapists’ Excellence in Practice Award in 2012. She went on to collaborate on research with Cardiff Metropolitan University, supported by Tenovus funding, and teaches the method to reflexologists internationally.

How is RLD different from other treatments?

Standard reflexology: a broader treatment working across a range of reflex areas on the feet. RLD follows a specific sequence with a lymphatic focus.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): a separate technique involving direct massage on the body. An RLD appointment is foot reflexology, not an MLD body treatment. If you are unsure which service to book, contact Fiona first.

Your appointment with Fiona

Your 60-minute appointment includes a consultation, so the full hour is not solely hands-on treatment. You will discuss relevant health history, current care, comfort and treatment goals before the foot reflexology sequence begins.

Wear comfortable clothing and be ready to remove your shoes and socks. Let Fiona know about foot sensitivity or anything that could affect your comfort. You can ask for a pause at any point. There is no need to book a course in advance: any follow-up appointments and their spacing are agreed individually.

Is this treatment right for me?

You may be interested in RLD if you would like to explore a focused, foot-based complementary treatment. If your interest relates to swelling or a diagnosed condition, please discuss suitability before booking rather than using the treatment to assess a health concern.

Please contact Fiona before booking if you have lymphoedema, unexplained swelling, recent surgery or are receiving cancer treatment. Treatment depends on suitability and should fit alongside your existing healthcare plan.

RLD does not replace medical assessment, prescribed compression or specialist lymphoedema support. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

What does the research say?

Early studies have explored RLD for lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment. A feasibility study published in 2016 involved 26 women with swelling in one arm. It reported reductions in arm volume and improvements in participants’ concerns and wellbeing. However, there was no control group, so the researchers could not establish that RLD caused those changes.

These findings support further investigation, rather than a promise of results for an individual client. Larger, well-controlled studies are needed. The findings should not be extended into claims that RLD treats unrelated medical conditions.

Common questions

Does RLD involve a full-body massage?

No. This appointment is a foot reflexology treatment. You remain clothed apart from removing your shoes and socks.

Do I need to have lymphoedema to enquire?

No. You are welcome to ask about the treatment and whether it is appropriate for you. A consultation is included, and treatment remains subject to suitability.

How many appointments will I need?

There is no single schedule for everyone. Discuss any further visits with Fiona after your first appointment; a particular result or number of sessions cannot be guaranteed.

Can I continue my existing healthcare?

RLD is complementary to your existing care. Do not change prescribed treatment, compression or advice from your healthcare team because you have booked reflexology.
